Quick Notes with content reminders from Lightroom Tutorial 15th April 2019

These are just quick jottings to help you jog your memory.

Develop Modules in Lightroom

Workflow.

A previous tutorial suggested a starting point might be.

Highlights – Full Left

Shadows – Full Right

White – Option/Alt and whatever

Blacks – Option/Alt and whatever

Alternative Starting point. 

Exposure – centre the Histogram a bit if necessary. Don’t worry about blowout of highlights or shadows

Highlights – Hold Option/Alt down- left some to remove blowouts

Whites – Hold Option/Alt down – left/right some to remove blowouts

Shadows – Hold Option/Alt down- right some to play with shadows

Blacks – Hold Option/Alt down- left/right some to play with shadows

A different starting point results from the previous slider movements

An update and good variations to previous processing tips.

A third staring point might be

  • Highlights – full left
  • Shadows – full Right
  • Whites- no change
  • Blacks – no change
  • Dehaze approx 75%
  • Saturation – drop to get rid of over saturation
  • Clarity etc

Now use a pair (or more) linear gradients to enhance details

Basic linear and radial gradient filters to highlight picture elements in your images. e.g skies

(a) Skies
Put in Linear GF from top to horizon – zero exposure change. Then play with

  • Dehaze
  • Brush
  • Smart Brush
  • Colour overlay

(b) Foreground

Put in Linear GF from bottom to horizon – zero exposure change. Then play with

  • Clarity
  • Brush
  • Smart Brush
  • Colour overlay

Basic Dodging and Burning

Use the Brush tool or radial gradient filter.

  • Brush
  • Flow – 75% Feather 75%
  • Opacity – whatever

Split Toning

  • Use of the Option/Alt key with Hue to pick the colour for highlights. Increase saturation to your wishes
  • Use of the Option/Alt key with Hue to pick the colour for shadows. Increase saturation to your wishes

A comment on Presets and Profiles – how are they different

  • Preset
  • Adjustments
  • LUT
  • No adjustments
  • Use when you want

When might you use Presets and Profiles.

  • Anytime

Extra Note re Photoshop.
Experiment with AUTO Levels. Command (window) Shift – L

Then FADE – Command (Window) Shift – F

Blend to Normal and choose between 0-100%

Blend to Multiply and choose between 0-100%
